HHS students win annual Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest

HTSD congratulates HHS students Kai Suyama (Grade 11) and Andrew Kaehly (Grade 10) on winning the Upper Division Scenes of the 28th Annual Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest.

More than 400 area students from over 60 schools competed in the preliminary rounds of the contest at Pittsburgh Public Theater. Participants submitted video performances of monologues and/or scenes they had chosen from the works of William Shakespeare.

Kai and Andrew performed, “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” during the Showcase of Finalists held live at the O'Reilly Theater on Monday, February 28.

"Kai and Andrew have an innate ability to not only comprehend the true meaning of Shakespeare’s words, but to perform it in a way that let’s their audience enjoy the humor and the drama," said Dr. Melissa Survinski, Enrichment Facilitator. "I am so proud to have helped them go from a chosen section of lines to the incredible performance they gave at the O’Reilly Theater. Their hard work, meticulous attention to detail, and their determination to have the audience hanging on their every word paid off. They made Hampton proud with that performance!"

Teams of judges evaluated each participant. Students in grades 8-12 competed in the Upper Division while grades 4-7 competed in the Lower Division.

Hampton Middle School students Jasmine White (Grade 6) and Andrew Craig (Grade 8) were also named as Honorable Mentions.
